First of all, I should admit to my empty stomach and 3 Crown and diets… which is my favourite drink, and has been for 5 years due to Dimebag (R.I.P) and my good friend Manny. However, regardless of whether or not it alters my state of being, it affects my judgment of live music not one bit and tonight, after a long day’s work, I went to Jaxx (a regular metal haunt) in Springfield, VA, specifically to see Abigail Williams, whose Legend EP made a lasting effect on me. If you have not yet seen this Phoenix-born, currently Cleveland-based black metal band, I honestly don’t know what you’re waiting for… Supported by Burning the Masses (whose CD I lovingly added to my Itunes) and Rose Funeral (whose singer’s antics reminded me curiously of Ben Falgoust of Goatwhore and Soilent Green and awesomeness fame but whose music hasn’t yet grabbed my attention so much) Abigail Williams fucking brings it with brutality seconded by… hmmmm, no one?!? I’ve seen some amazing black metal bands, but these dudes have something special. Maybe it’s because they feel no need for face paint or black leather or even a live keyboardist (the drummer can trigger that shit) but I think they’ve got that swagger (yeah, people give me shit about saying that certain metal bands are catchy or drop into that groove, I’m adding that metal bands can have swagger now…) and they’ve captured me, hook, line and sinker. It doesn’t hurt that their vocalist is sexy as shit… ok NOW you can blame the crown and diet.
Their latest CD is In The Shadow of a Thousands Suns, don’t hesitate to buy Legend and be sure to check out Vehemence as well if you didn’t know…
